Overview

What do Zoho Books accountants handle inside the Zoho suite?

Zoho Books is part of the wider Zoho One ecosystem: a comprehensive business suite covering CRM, marketing, inventory, project management, HR and accounting. For businesses already running Zoho CRM or Zoho Inventory, Zoho Books is the natural accounting choice because the integration is native rather than third-party, which matters most for the subscription businesses covered on SaaS accountants.

Zoho Books has particular traction in the UAE and Indian markets (where Zoho is headquartered and has dominant presence) and increasingly in cost-conscious UK and US SMEs. Pricing is materially lower than Xero or QuickBooks (Free plan for very small businesses, Standard from £6/month, Premium from £18/month), which makes it attractive for early-stage businesses, particularly the UAE SMEs filing through the Federal Tax Authority.

We are Zoho Books certified partners. For Zoho-ecosystem businesses we run the full accounting function inside Zoho Books with proper integration to your CRM, Inventory and Subscriptions modules. For non-Zoho-ecosystem businesses where Zoho Books is being chosen on price, we work in it but note the trade-offs compared to Xero Certified Advisor accountants or QuickBooks ProAdvisor accountants.

The honest answer

When should you not choose Zoho Books?

When price is the only reason. A business that picks Zoho Books purely because it is cheaper than Xero, and runs none of the rest of the Zoho suite, gets a narrower app ecosystem for a saving that is small against the cost of a single misfiled return. Choose it because the CRM, the inventory and the subscription billing already live there. That integration is genuinely hard to replicate with connectors, and it is the whole argument.

In the United Arab Emirates the case is different and much stronger. VAT has applied at 5 per cent since 1 January 2018 under the rules published by the Federal Tax Authority, and federal Corporate Tax at 9 per cent applies to taxable income above AED 375,000 for financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023. Both are filed through EmaraTax, and Zoho Books produces the report formats that process expects without a workaround.

Small Business Relief is the provision most UAE owners have heard of and fewest have modelled. Where revenue stays under the published threshold for the relevant period, an eligible business can elect to be treated as having no taxable income, as described in the FTA guidance on Small Business Relief. Electing still means registering and filing. Our UAE VAT and Corporate Tax compliance calendar sets out the dates, and accountants for UAE SMEs covers the full service.

UK businesses on Zoho Books file Making Tax Digital for VAT returns directly, since Zoho appears on HMRC's compatible software list. Ongoing work runs through cloud bookkeeping services, VAT, GST and tax compliance and monthly management accounts. Subscription businesses on the Zoho stack should also read SaaS accountants. The full scope we run on a Zoho ledger is listed in our complete accounting service list.

"We run Zoho One end-to-end: CRM, Books, Projects, People, HR. Accountaire works inside Zoho Books with full integration to the rest. Materially cheaper than a Xero stack would have been."

Zoho Books questions.

How does Zoho Books compare to Xero?
Cheaper. Less mature ecosystem of third-party apps (though the native Zoho ecosystem is broader than Xero's native suite). Slightly less polished UI. For businesses already on Zoho One, the integration wins outweigh the UI gap. For businesses not on Zoho ecosystem, Xero is generally a better choice.
Is Zoho Books UK MTD-compliant?
Recognition covers the software. It does not cover your records, and the digital link rule in VAT Notice 700/22 is what fails at takeover: a figure copied out of a spreadsheet and typed in breaks the chain even when the submission itself goes through cleanly. Flat rate and cash accounting need setting before the first return too, since retro-fitting a scheme mid-quarter means rebuilding it.
Can you handle FTA VAT in Zoho Books?
Yes. What catches UAE businesses out is not the submission but the detail underneath it. Standard-rated supplies are reported emirate by emirate, so a company trading from two emirates has to allocate them rather than put everything in one box. Input tax on entertainment and on certain motor vehicles is blocked outright. The Federal Tax Authority publishes both rules, and we set the tax codes to match at onboarding.
What's the integration with Zoho Subscriptions like?
Native. MRR / ARR calculations flow through Subscriptions; invoice and revenue recognition flow through Books. For subscription businesses on the Zoho stack, this combination is materially less work than Xero + Chargebee or QuickBooks + Stripe-billing.
When is UAE Corporate Tax registration due?
Registration is required regardless of whether tax is ultimately payable, and the Federal Tax Authority has set deadlines by licence issue date rather than a single national date. The return is filed within nine months of the end of the relevant tax period. The mistake we take over most often is a company that assumed Small Business Relief removed the obligation to register at all.
Does Zoho Books handle the UAE reverse charge?
Yes, with the correct tax code applied at the transaction. Imported services from outside the UAE are the usual failure point: the charge has to appear in both the output and input boxes of the return, and a business that simply omits it understates both sides. We check the reverse charge treatment as part of every quarterly review.
What does the Zoho Books free plan actually cover?
Core invoicing, expenses and basic reporting for a very small business under Zoho's published revenue limit, with restrictions on users and workflows. It is enough for a pre-revenue company or a single-director consultancy. Anything with stock, multi-currency or a real approval chain needs a paid tier, and we will say which one before you commit.
Can you migrate me from Xero / QuickBooks to Zoho Books?
Yes: standard migration scope. Historical data, chart of accounts, opening balances. Most clients moving to Zoho are doing so because they're adopting the broader Zoho ecosystem.
