Overview

What do MYOB accountants handle for an Australian SME?

MYOB is the established accounting platform in Australia, with a particular hold on businesses that have been operating for 10+ years. The product range spans MYOB Business (cloud-native, simpler), AccountRight (cloud-hybrid with desktop component), MYOB Advanced (mid-market ERP) and the older MYOB Essentials product.

For Australian SMEs, MYOB and Xero are the two dominant platforms. The split is generational and operational, newer Australian businesses tend toward Xero (cleaner UI, broader app ecosystem); established businesses with 10+ years of MYOB data and trained finance staff tend to stay on MYOB. Both routes are covered on accountants for Australian SMEs.

We support both, and our Australian practice is fluent in both platforms. For MYOB clients we run the full scope inside MYOB. For clients moving to Xero, we handle migration as standard scope, and lodgement to the Australian Taxation Office continues uninterrupted through the switch.

The honest answer

Should you migrate from MYOB to Xero?

Most of the time, no. This is the one piece of advice on this page a software-agnostic firm would print and a Xero-only firm would not. If MYOB is running, your bookkeeper knows it, and the reports you need come out of it, the migration is a cost with no return. Budget four to six weeks for an AccountRight file with five years of history, plus the fee, plus a month where nobody trusts the numbers. Set that against a slightly nicer interface and the answer is usually to stay.

Migrate when MYOB is actively blocking something. The three cases we see are a business that needs an app MYOB has no equivalent of, a group that has acquired a second entity and needs consolidated reporting, and a finance team that has lost the one person who understood the desktop file. In each case the constraint is real, and we run the move: historical data imported, chart of accounts mapped, opening balances reconciled to the last lodged company tax return, then a parallel month before cutover.

Nothing about the compliance calendar changes either way. Single Touch Payroll Phase 2 reports to the Australian Taxation Office on every pay event rather than at year end, superannuation guarantee contributions have to be received by the fund (not merely paid) by the quarterly due date, and Business Activity Statements follow the cycle the ATO assigns you rather than one you pick. A quarterly BAS lodged through a registered agent gets a later date than one you lodge yourself, a difference to weigh before you decide to do it in-house.

Our Australian scope sits on accountants for Australian SMEs, with payroll through multi-jurisdiction payroll services, BAS and GST through VAT, GST and tax compliance, and board reporting through monthly management accounts. Businesses running stock-heavy operations elsewhere in the group often end up comparing this with Sage 50 and Sage Business Cloud accountants. The services we run on top of an MYOB ledger are listed in our full accounting and tax service list.

"We considered Xero. The migration cost and team retraining didn't make sense. Accountaire runs our MYOB AccountRight expertly. BAS lands on time every quarter without us thinking about it."

MYOB-specific questions.

MYOB Business or MYOB AccountRight?
MYOB Business is the simpler, cloud-native product, comparable to Xero or QBO. MYOB AccountRight is the more powerful product with desktop and cloud components, better for businesses with more complex inventory, payroll or job-costing needs.
Is MYOB STP-compliant?
Yes: STP Phase 2 fully implemented across MYOB Business and AccountRight. Reporting goes to the ATO on every pay event.
Should I migrate from MYOB to Xero?
Depends. If MYOB is working and your team is trained on it, the migration cost (typically £3k–£8k of professional fees plus 1–2 months of disruption) usually outweighs benefits. Where MYOB is genuinely holding back the business (slow workflows, poor reporting, missing integrations), we recommend migration.
How long does MYOB to Xero migration take?
4–6 weeks from AccountRight, and less from MYOB Business, where being cloud-only removes the file handling that slows the desktop product down. The sequence does not change with the length: bring the history over, map the accounts, agree the opening balances against your last lodged figures, then run one month in both systems. Payroll is the piece to plan around, because moving part way through a financial year means year-to-date figures have to carry across rather than restart.
When is the quarterly BAS due?
A quarterly BAS lodged directly is generally due 28 days after the quarter ends, with the December quarter extended to 28 February. Lodging through a registered agent normally buys additional time under the ATO lodgement program. We work to the agent dates, and we file the September, December, March and June quarters as a standing job rather than waiting for a reminder.
How does superannuation guarantee actually catch people out?
The test is when the fund receives the money, not when you pay it. Clearing houses take days, so a payment made on the due date arrives late and the whole contribution stops being deductible, with a superannuation guarantee charge on top. We schedule contributions a clear week before each quarterly date for exactly this reason.
Do you lodge Fringe Benefits Tax returns from MYOB?
Yes, where there are reportable benefits. The FBT year runs to 31 March, separately from the 30 June income tax year, which is the part most owners miss. Cars, entertainment and staff loans are the three categories that generate almost every FBT return we prepare for an SME.
Do you handle MYOB Advanced (the ERP)?
Yes, for the accounting work around it. MYOB Advanced is an ERP rather than a larger version of AccountRight, so the configuration itself sits with certified Advanced implementation partners and we work alongside them. Our side is the month end, the reporting and the compliance filings for the larger Australian SMEs already running on the platform.
